any advice on building open motors, tips, tricks, tools, etc. any advice would be great. thanks
Bruce,
Thanks for asking, but that is a rather broad topic!
In general, you will need to glue things that were previously just held by screws. This would include hardware and endbell mounting screws. You will need to use heatsink paste on the brushes. The current state of the art will require somewhat smaller slugs and hones than most other classes.
Pay very close attention to what others are doing. Variables include winds, wiresizes, magnet configurations and airgaps not used on other motor types. In general, lower power argues for fewer magnet segments, larger wire, and fewer turns, and the opposites are true for high power.
Perhaps once you get started, I can help you with better specifics. I'll need to know more about the tracks, power supplies, the combinations that seem to work, whats available to you, etc. Good luck!
