Monty:
Is there any reason that one can not reuse the brushes after a com cut? Seems a shame to toss brushes with sufficient length that aren't burnt providing of course that the combination of com cut and used brush still allows adequate spring preload. Just wondering what your thoughts are on this.
Secondly. The FX endbells for C motors are copper, those for D motors are plated, nickel perhaps? Anyway, they share hardware spacing. Any advantage to use of the copper hoods and plates scavenged from C’s on D’s?

Marty,
Yes, you can reuse brushes. Since they vary somewhat in conductivity and hardness, its even a good idea to preserve them along with notes on a motor's performance. Especially good motors probably had better than average brushes in them: use these until they are too short!
The ProSlot C hardware is phosphor bronze. The D hardware is nickle plated brass. The bronze hoods are stiffer, straighter, and have less slop in them. I recently had one of my local correspondants come up with a hood shaping punch (you use it with a Slick 7 type alignment bar) that works well on the Chinese hoods. Maybe, not promising anything, we will develop it for sale.

Seems to me I have gotten several of the Pro Slot PS-641 brush hood and headsink kits for the D-can that have been the Phosphor bronze. I use them in classes in our local racing where we can change the hardware. The State series here in Florida doesn't allow it except in the Expert classes. I actually prefer the phosphor bronze kits as the hoods are straighter and everything lines up better.

Great to know as I'v been tossing them being unsure. Little buggers are pricey. As well on hardware as I'll take any edge I can :) Thanks

Hi Martyn, I started a thread in Monty's section called "Brush Phenomenon" on 6-5-08, you may want to look through the three pages of posts there, it will expand further.
