Hi monty,
I was wondering what is your method for installing magnets into a c-can. I've tried a bunch of methods, just curious to see how you do it? I use a steel slug and just align them up in the can. as they stick to the slug. im sure u use a similar method. last thing, if setting a gap to 530 would you use a 528 or 529 slug vs an exact size slug? thanks

Brian,

I open the bushing journal to about .215" dia., use a can slug with shaft (bushing installation tool) to solder in the bushing or bearing, and then use the steel slug in the entire setup - endbell included - to space the magnets. If you've sized the can properly,
a gap of .530" will only have .0025 space behind the magnets. I prefer larger gaps, .534 or so, so my magnets are often a bit tight. For that reason, I use a very thin CA glue to ensure maximum coverage. I also, in a Kelly can, always fold the ends of the retaining tabs in after everything sets up.

I use a slug as large as my intended gap, and I'd rather end up slightly large than slightly small. Using a .528 slug is inviting a nasty glance from the techie! If the can warps at all from heat, crashing, eating a pin - whatever - you're busted! For me, larger gaps run faster anyway...:-)
